Planting time for forest trees branches out to new seasons

Texas research shows mid September success with containerized trees

COLLEGE STATION Most foresters hold to the straight and narrow when it comes to planting pine trees: nursery seedlings go in the ground between Dec. 1 and March 1. Period.

But a Texas Agricultural Experiment Station study is branching out to show that early planting even as early as mid September can give slash pine trees a growing head start towards better survivability, thus faster regrowth on harvested or burnt areas.

The key is containers. Rather than plunge the bare roots of tiny trees into the soil, research is showing that seedlings grown in containers until the moment of planting, then planted with the potting medium intact ar replica watches ound the roots isn’t as shocking to the transplants, according to Dr. Mike Messina, Experiment Station forest scientist.

“Planting earlier is proving to be a good idea, because they do get a better start,” Messina said. “The containerized plants are having more than 90 percent survival after that critical first year in the ground.”

Bare root trees planted in September have as little as 60 percent survival, he said.

Messina said the reason replica watches bare root trees are planted in far greater numbers than container grown trees is cost and efficiency.

“Some nurseries annually grow 25 million seedlings on relatively few acres,” he explained. “After lifting, they pack about 1,000 of them cardboard boxes or paper bags that one person can easily lift.”

Those boxes are easy to transport, light to carry to the field and quickly planted in a matter of seconds, he added.

Container grown trees take up more space, have to be watered more often and are more difficult to transport. But the study may find that the increased survivability offsets the additional effort and cost.

The study is being funded by Boise Cascade Corp. with the research plots

located on industrial tree farms in Louisiana. But, Messina said, the findings there are readily adaptable to eastern Texas and other southern forests.

The study is beginning its third of three years. By April 2003, about 18,000 slash pine trees will have been planted and measured for growth, survival and physiological performance. More conclusive data and planting recommendations are expected by the spring 2004, but Messina said some results are already obvious.

“The beauty of the containerized plants is uniformity,” Messina added. “Bareroot study plots will have rows where three or four trees died, one is doing well and one is a runt. The containterized trees are almost all alive and have about the same height.”

Uniformity is important for timber companies that seek trees of similar size for ease of processing, he explained.

“When the forest products industry finds a good performing tree, they want its offspring to be just like it,” Messina said. “So, they use vegetative propagation taking cuttings continuously from the mother plant so the offspring will be genetically identical.”

Those cuttings, rooted in containers, become the new trees that have been performing well. The test was to see how well they would fair in the field. For each row of bare root seedlings, a row of rooted cuttings was planted alongside. Since the containerized tree roots are not exposed, better survival might result thereby expanding the planting window of time.

“We’re trying before, during and after typical planting months of December March,” he said. “We’re planting in Sep replica watches tember, which is considered really early, and again in November, January, early March and late April.”

If a tree survives a September planting so that its roots begin to grow in the fall, that tree will be further along in growing the following spring when new trees are just being planted. Also, if the window of planting time can be expanded, that will ease the time crunch for planting crews that are in demand during the usual December March planting season.

Fall planting has been largely rejected by foresters, mainly because it’s “terribly, terribly hot” replica watches and often dry in much of the southern forest region, making it hard for even the most adapted plants to survive.

“We pray for autumn rains,” Messina said. “A tropical storm can be a blessing to us.”

Weather, soil moisture, air temperature and other atmospheric conditions are being recorded at each planting site so that researchers can consider those factors in analyzing tree growth and making more long term recommendations.

Planting seeds for top wines at Haywards of Locksley

“We only want to produce good wine, and have no interest in producing wine that isn’t terrific,” David said.

The couple planted more vines in 2004, and now have a small vineyard of 2ha, including mainly shiraz, as well as viognier, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, petit verdot and a small amount of merlot and malbec.

The couple installed a winery with a 40 tonne crushing capacity in 2004 and now produce three, award winning wines.

“We process about 10 tonne, but we could easily, without blinking, move that up to about 30 40 tonne if we needed,” David said.

“It’s quite a reasonably set up winery in terms of space.”

These days, most of the couple’s wine is made at nearby Delbard Winery, as both David and Jane work full time.

“We do a little bit of our production, but my full time work was teaching winemaking and it took me away from here, so, in about 2009, we got some of our wine contract produced, and then again each season since,” David said.

“Our wine is always made very traditionally.

“We use open fermenters, hand plunging, basket pressi replica watches ng, minimum intervention, natural saddling of the wine, all those sorts of things.

“It doesn’t go through the normal, industrial winemaking processes.

“One of the reasons that we get our wine made at Delbard is that’s the way they make wine,” he said.

David has been teaching winemaking 14 years, most recently at the University of Melbourne.

“My parents had a vineyard for years, which I was involved with, but this is my first serious project,” David said.

“What we’ve done is what we think is right for this territory.

“The shiraz is notoriously good anywhere in Australia. It just shows its own character depending on where you put it and let it express itself.”

David said it had been hard to pick a white variety to suit the climate.

“We picked viognier because we think it makes a good wine in this sort of region,” he said.

But, at the end of the day, red wine is David’s greatest passion.

“I guess our blended red is about our passion for those varieties together,” David said.

The couple is now hoping to move to Tasmania and find a similar sized winery.

In a good year, the winery has produced about as much as three tonnes to the hectare of various varieties, and up to eight tonnes to the hectare of shiraz.

The winery has been run organically and biodynamically.

“We’re not certified, so we don’t make big claims about it, but we’ve never put an insecticide, herbicide or fungicide out in the vineyard in the 13 years,” Jane said.

“It’s never had synthetic fertilisers. It has natural composts. We have grass underneath the vines, so it’s not immaculate like a Mornington Peninsula vineyard might look.”

David and Jane also run about 500 sheep on agistment.

David said the property would suit somebody from Melbourne looking for a small vineyard and weekend lifest replica watches yle. replica watches

“Someone who is wanting to grow the business bigger might want to take it over. The vineyard is already started and the winery is already there.”

The house, which they saved from demolition after moving it from the University of Melbourne’s Dookie agriculture campus, has been renovated and has three bedrooms, a dining room, loungeroom, bathroom, separate toilet and kitchen.

Planting Roses In Containers

Containers make gardening possible for any size home. On The Saturday Early Show, gardening expert P. It blooms early to mid summer into fall and needs full sun and well drained soil.1 container of fertilizerStart by mixing the soil and water retentive polymers together in the terra cotta pot. Next, position the 3 gallon rose in the back of the container. The rose will serve as a tall “spiky” element and also as a dark green background.

Design tip: Flowers and brilliant foliage are more attractive against a green background.

With the rose in place, it’s time to fill in with companion plants that will complement the rose. While the rose is certainly perennial, Smith likes to use interesting annual plants in containers so that he can enjoy variety every year.

The round elements should be placed closest to the rose, while the cascading eleme replica watches nts should be closer to the lip of the pot and allowed to flow over the front. While the rose provides height to the container, it’s important for the other elements to be lower to allow for air circulation, which will cut down on the chance for disease.

Finally, make sure your saucer is under the pot and water your new container in with an all purpose liquid fertilizer. Water the container when the soil appears dry and fertilize approximately once a month.
